WorkWell showcases primary care strategies at GP conference

JM GP conferenceLeaders from the WorkWell programme and Walsall Together shared new strategies for improving access to work and health support during a presentation at this year’s RCGP (Royal College of General Practitioners) Annual Conference at the ICC in Wales, highlighting their integrated approach within Primary Care Networks.

WorkWell were invited to deliver a poster presentation outlining how its work and health coaches are transforming support for individuals struggling with health-related barriers to employment. Operating within the local Integrated Care System (ICS) and led by Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, WorkWell is already receiving referrals from a wide range of sources including Jobcentre Plus, volunteer and community partners, employers, and crucially, Primary Care services.

The presentation, which was delivered on WorkWell’s behalf by Dr Joanna Maciver with contributions from Dr Rischie, Walsall Together Clinical Lead, focused on targeted initiatives currently being trialled in GP practices, particularly in areas with high levels of deprivation with a focus on Walsall. These pilots are designed to engage individuals early, especially those already navigating health challenges and to provide timely, accessible support. Key aspects discussed included:

  • Targeted outreach: Individuals with a Fit Note are now being contacted directly via text message with information about the programme and a self-referral link.
  • On-site engagement: Work and Health Coaches are hosting regular drop-in sessions within GP practices to offer face-to-face support.
  • Collaboration with Social Prescribers: Frontline staff have been briefed and equipped with marketing materials to encourage referrals.
  • Enhanced visibility: Digital graphics are used to promote WorkWell services through waiting room screens.
  • Professional development: A new training offer and a comprehensive Primary Care Pack has been created to raise awareness and improve signposting within practices.

The presentation also explored how feedback from GPs, coaches, and service users - along with routinely collected data - will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of each approach. This evidence base will inform the development of best practices both locally and nationally.

WorkWell’s presence at the conference underlined the growing importance of integrated, person-centred support that bridges the gap between health and employment services.
